Did you know bears have nurseries?
I wrote and illustrated an infographic series highlighting the findings of the Protecting Bear Dens in B.C. Forests report by the University of Victoria’s Environmental Law Clinic and Sierra Club BC. The goal was to make the important findings of this research accessible to the public and to inspire people to take action for bear dens.
Currently, it’s legal to log bear dens in most of B.C. and changes to provincial biodiversity policy in collaboration with Indigenous Nations would fix that. If the legislation passes not only will it help keep bear families healthy, but it will also help safeguard old-growth forests. That’s because black bears, particularly on Vancouver Island, rely heavily on dens associated with standing and downed large-diameter trees that are most commonly found in intact forests. So, by protecting bear dens, we are also helping ensure that the forests on which we all depend remain standing.Â
This popular infographic series was reached thousands on social media and helped contribute to over 10,000 letters being sent to MLAs in support of improving bear den protection in B.C.Â
